The Impact of the IOM Report on the Future of Nursing In 2008, as a response to the need for a transformation in the nursing field, the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and the Institute of Medicine created an action-oriented blueprint with recommendations for changes needed in nursing. This was a response for the need to assess and change the world of nursing to advance nursing practice in the future. This 600 plus page report focuses on four key messages which are described

The report provides us with enough evidence to set goals for the educational future of nursing. It also allows us to make guidelines for what is expected in the future, as the growth and changes in nursing continue. Leadership and Practice One of the key messages in the report focuses on nursing leadership stating that, “Nurses should be full partners, with physicians and other health professionals, in redesigning health care in the United States” (IOM, 2010). This is a change that would greatly affect the field of nursing, and benefit practice. The report provides ideas on different leadership programs for nurses, mentorship, and includes nursing involvement in the policy making process. This transformation of leadership would increase self-esteem in nurses and encourage participation and involvement. The report explains that to be effective in leadership roles, nurses must become more involved in policy, and allow themselves to shape and create what happens to them. This type of transformation would require better data collection and infrastructure, and we as nurses would need to respond. As nurses, we would have to start visualizing ourselves as leaders, and becoming more involved in organizations, committees, and boards that create the policies in which we follow. “Nurses must build new
