Following an adaption of Johns’ model of structured reflection (Jasper, 2003), I will discuss an event that occurred during my residential placement as a nursing student, what I have learnt and how I would act if the situation arose again. Lastly, I will discuss what I have learnt in relation to the Nursing Council of New Zealand competencies for cultural safety and communication.

Indicator 4 of this competency was met by asking Max to squeeze the care-giver’s hand when asked in order to ensure he could still hear us and to help him know that people were taking care of him. We established this technique of communication as Max was not able to respond well vocally and this was the easiest form of communication we could have Max without too much hassle. By using this form of communication with Max we were able to get a small understanding on his cognitive state by asking him to squeeze the care-givers hand around every 2 minutes until paramedics came. Crisp and Taylor (2001) believes that actions like holding a hand is particularly important for vulnerable clients who are experiencing severe illness with its accompanying physical and emotional loses. How did I feel about this experience when it was happening?
As soon as I walked in on the situation, I was very shocked and nervous as I did not know what I should do in order to help. As I started to help the care-giver it became easier to see what actions needed to be taken in order to ensure Max was safe and comfortable therefore making me feel more confident in the situation. For example, getting a blanket and a pillow for Max to ensure he was kept warm and still had some privacy. As the registered nurses and more care-givers came to help I started to grasp the seriousness of the situation making me feel upset and
