Reading can open one’s mind to the imagination of anything to be dreamt of. Poems, short stories, novels, plays, and dramas are all different types of literature that exist today. All of the different types of literature have their own ways and formats that they are written in. Literature has many ways of speaking to us as we read them, it can strike up emotions or memories that we have or it can make us rethink a situation that we are going through. Escaping is something that we would all like to do. Escape from the real world and just go on vacation for the rest of time, unfortunately we cannot do that though because bills do not pay themselves. The play Trifles by Susan Glaspell, is about a woman who is tired of being controlled by her husband and murders him after he takes away the only thing she enjoys. The setting of this play is the early 20th century and located in the Midwestern region of America (Bartlein, 2014). The play is located in a house that is dark and bone chilling, filled with negativity. Her husband is controlling and kills her bird. Her bird is her sanity and when it would sing, she would find herself in a happy place and not in their house. The plot begins by introducing the characters and what they do for a living. The rising action is when they find her husband dead on the floor and start trying to figure it out. The climax is when they realize the little things, the dead bird in the crushed cage, the house is a mess, and the fact that she was the one who killed her husband. Some of the symbols of this poem are the dead bird. She loved that bird and the song it sung. The bird symbolizes her desire to be happy and the cage is her husband holding her back from that, trapping her in an unhappy place. Another symbol is the uneven quilt, which stands for her stability and mental condition. It is uneven and would not hold together long. The theme of this play is that women were not treated
