Abstract
On March 23, 2010, President Obama signed the Affordable Care Act (ACA) into law, allowing all Americans access to affordable health care. Despite the urgent need to provide health care to all Americans some Governors and elected Congressmen continue to debate over the necessity to expand Medicaid and the ACA. The Supreme Court on June 28, 2012 ruled in support of the ACA by upholding the individual mandate which require Americans to have health care insurance. Americans without health care insurance, because of this new health care policy will be able to either purchase insurance through the exchange market or through the expansion of Medicaid. Krooks (2012) asserts health care bills of the recipients of Medicaid will be paid thus reducing the number of hospitals and physicians left with unpaid accounts. The government will fund 100% of the expansion for the first 3 years and 90% of the cost thereafter. Holahan, Buettgens, & Dorn (2013) affirm “Medicaid expansion brings in many new federal Medicaid dollars buying health care, which leads to the purchase of other goods and services. The resulting economic activity generates state revenue (income taxes, sales taxes, etc.).” Third, it is the right of every American to have access to quality health care. Sacred Heart University 2013 highlights the four core concepts of the human journey; Concept 1: What does it mean to be human? Concept 2: What does it mean to live a life of meaning and purpose? Concept 3: What does it mean to understand and appreciate the natural world? Concept 4: What does it mean to forge a more just society for the common good? Adopting these four concepts surely support the expansion of Medicaid and satisfy ethical reasoning. Finally, on the political front opponents of the Medicaid expansion are running ads on television seeking support to defund the ACA.
