This is what attracted me to research on M&S.

Though it hadn’t had a very good last year in terms of financial prospect, it was on the news about Stuart Rose‘s dual role of Chairman and CEO controversy. Because of its business nature it was very much affected by recent recession but did manage to perform better than rival John Lewis Partnership (JLP).

1.3 Research approach

The research and analysis project objective would be analyzing the business and financial aspect of M&S compared to John Lewis Partnership (JLP). The main objectives are:

· To analyze sales revenue of the company by doing three years trend analysis.
· To examine the profitability of the company by doing trend analysis.
· Evaluate liquidity of the company for the short term financial stability.
· To evaluate of the financial position of the company by reviewing the level of financial risk in the long term.
· To scrutinize the investors ratio of the company.
· To assess the company’s current position through SWOT analysis.

1.4 Aim and Objective of the research

This research and analysis will attempt to the financial performance and future prospect of M&S from an investor point of view. Typically it involves interpretation of financial statement and ratio analysis of M&S over last three years. Investors are mostly concern about the profit, dividend prospect and return on the shares.
