He tries to form positive connections with his past but there are many barriers he encounters as he fails to comprehend with the identity of his culture. He creates a sense a confusion and loneliness, through referring to himself as a separate being, “Why do you wake as…”.
He does not acknowledge or understand his cultural identify emphasising his lack of ability to belong. He is using a tone that symbolises confusion and a number of questions are asked from five of the seven stanzas “who”, “what”, “why” and “how”, this proves his displacement within his family.
Ancestors have genetic relationship and therefore are a part of each other through the poem we see that now he does not fit into the “shoulder to shoulder” wall that his ancestors are forming but when he passes he may very well join them.
In the Poem “10 Mary Street” the reader’s perspective is changed towards the views of migrant experience as it is written from eyes of a young boy. He watches his parents try to bond the life the had in Poland with the one they are living now and it does not reflect compassion as it was something himself never knew.
The poem shows how his family has moved from Poland to Australia, then having to move again due to their land being on space that is going to be used for industrial purposes creating a sense of impermanency.
