Evaluate the ancient and modern interpretations of Sennacherib’s effectiveness as a ruler.
There are many ancient and modern interpretations about Sennacherib’s effectiveness as a ruler. Sennacherib was a king from 704 BCE up to 681BCE. He accomplished numerous things for Assyria such as, the expansion of the empire, build water supplies to the city and the gain of support from the gods to the Assyrian people. The ancient and modern interpretations provide many information’s about Sennacherib’s building projects, military and religious role. Sennacherib was a very effective ruler and this will be assessed throughout this essay.

This booty came from the siege of Lachish. This source is also outstanding because it proves that Sennacherib received booty and tributes. A modern source by Forbes.pp78-9 says “I advanced swiftly against Babylon, which I had determined to conquer. I broke loose lie the approach of a storm… I completely surrounded the city…” This source is about Sennacherib destroying Babylon. This is a modern source which also is a very magnificent source as it proves that Sennacherib was a very successful ruler in military. This was one of Sennacherib’s characteristic as an effective ruler through his military campaigns.

Sennacherib was a very effective ruler; this is shown through the ancient and modern interpretations. Sennacherib had a very religious role which is one of the characteristic as an effective ruler. Religion is very important for the king and the empire as through it the king can achieve military campaigns and building project. Assyria was Polytheism Empire and the national god was Ashur. The king had many religious role and responsibilities toward the gods and goddesses. They include building temples and ziggurats, offering and divination, expanding the empire, and meeting the needs of gods just as food and clothing.
