I. Major Facts
Fauquier Gas Company is one of the largest supplier of gas in the United States. Bill Murphy is the manager of Supply Management and is responsible for purchasing of materials used in distribution of gas such as pipes, meters, and fittings as well as other various materials. The supply organization falls directly under the vice-president for operations.
II. Major Problem

He overheard a conversation in the cafeteria which means he knew nothing about the request. Next, the three sections mentioned (purchasing, engineers, and construction) seem to have no communication between them despite working all under the vice-president for operations. Because of the above mentioned, this leaves the mills with little lead time in order to fulfill order by Fauquier Gas. Lastly, Mr. Murphy heard about the pipes in January and as of April still has not received the purchase request on a project that requires lead time and is scheduled to start in 6 weeks as of April.
2. Fauquier Gas Company has a major project to add 3.5 miles of gas lines to accommodate a new residential/commercial zone. They need to procure pipes in order to meet established timeline with a start date of June and have little time to execute procurement because of broken communication between departments.
3. One possible solution in order to establish a better system would be to develop a cross-functional team which includes at minimum the engineers, construction leads, and the procurement leads. By establishing a cross functional team this would allow better communication between departments earlier in the project. If this was implemented prior to the 3.5 mile project them Mr. Murphy would have know about it first and could have informed other departments of required lead times for the mills.
