The Importance of using Research to Advance the Counseling Profession

Being able to read, understand, and effectively apply research in practice is an important part of the counselor’s job. Research is a systematic investigation that involves collecting, analyzing, and interpreting information in a sequential manner in order to increase our understanding of the phenomenon of interest. Counselors who conduct research become interested in a topic and a specific question; they set about gathering the data needed to answer the question, analyze the data, and report results to others in the profession. The author created a composite index of the social environment in 34 counties, including (1) the proportion of same-sex couples, (2) the proportion of registered Democrats, (3) the presence of gay-straight alliances in schools, and (4) school policies (nondiscrimination and anti-bullying) that specifically protected lesbian, gay, and bisexual students. (Hatzenbuehler, 2011)
Qualitative design. The article, “A Study of Young Lesbian and Gay People’s School Experiences,” used a qualitative design in their research. Seventeen young LG people aged between 16–21 years participated in the study. Participants were white and included 12 males and five females. The participants were from three lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender (LGBT) support groups in the northwest of England. Young LG people provided informed consent by voluntarily agreeing to participate in the research through telling their LG support group leader and signing a participant consent form which was given to the researcher prior to interviewing the young people. In order to make sure the young people’s consent was a continual process the researcher ensured they knew they could withdraw from the research at any time. Data were collected from six individual interviews. (Robinson, 2010)
