Types of Sources of Evidence/Appropriateness/Classifications The article from the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) and American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP) that addresses acute otitis media (AOM) is a filtered resource. This article is appropriate for use in nursing practice as it establishes diagnosis and management guidelines for the treatment of AOM. In addition the article recommends treatment options for the symptoms of AOM and addresses the concept of watchful waiting. The article gives guidelines on how to diagnose AOM and the most common signs and symptoms. Education staff in the proper way to diagnosis AOM using the article guidelines would need to be implemented in the clinic. With a proper diagnosis the correct treatment plan can be put in place leading to faster pain relieve and reduction in symptoms. The article establishes criteria that must be present for a confirmed diagnosis of AOM. If the criterion is not met, then other illness or conditions must be considered such as upper respiratory infection or a virus. A flow chart is included in the article to aide in the treatment and allows for easy to follow interventions and treatment options such as which antibiotic to use and when watchful waiting should be concerned. In the clinical setting this criteria for treatment must be discussed to assure everyone is clear on the proper usage of the tools laid out in the flow chart for treatment. Pharmacy should be involved to answer any questions about the medications suggested for use. Also listed are the effectiveness and side effects of medications prescribed for treating AOM, the staff should be educated on the proper prescribing of these medications. All of these steps help to improve nursing care in the clinical setting by implementing evidence based guidelines in the care of the patient.
