My own perspective on Advanced Practice Nursing

ABSTRACT:
The need for continuing education in nursing has been accentuated in response to rapidly changing health care environment. Expanding knowledge by pursuing higher education allows nurses to enlarge one’s practice. Furthermore, higher education in nursing has been shown that a nurse’s level of education can become a critical factor to the patient-centered quality of care. This essay describes increased demand for higher education in nursing and emphasizes the necessity of continuing education to provide optimum patient care in various setting.

Rather, one is consider as care provider who comes in second followed by physicians. However, there is an increasing awareness in the healthcare setting for nurses to work in partnership with other healthcare team members such as physicians, lab technicians, dietitians, pharmacists and so on. In order to provide best quality of patient care, nurse should take up a leadership position in the healthcare setting along with other healthcare professionals. It is because not only nurses are people who provide direct patient care, but also one’s role as communication tools between patients and other healthcare professionals. Nurses diagnose, plan, implement, evaluate, protect, and advocate for patients along with other healthcare team members. While nurse plays such an important role in patient care, there is no doubt that nurse should take up the leadership in the healthcare setting. Due to become a valuable leader, continuing education becomes crucial and necessity key. Vital keys includes seeking higher education, studying evidence-based practice, learning to improve leadership skills, practicing critical thinking skills, and adopting new technologies. By doing so, nurses finally able to incorporate most up to date nursing knowledge into their practice. However, achieving higher education cannot simply turn nurses into a qualify leader.
