Outlier Essay: Martin Luther King Jr.
An outlier is a person or thing situated away or detached from the main body or system. In other words, an outlier is somebody who goes out of his or her way and does something extraordinary in order to accomplish their goal. Martin Luther King Jr. is a true example of an outlier. In the early 1900s, segregation was strongly recognized in the United States, until Martin Luther King Jr. stood up for what he believed in and made a change. Although he made a difference to the United States, he was assassinated in the making of this process. This assassination is an example to why Martin Luther King Jr. is considered to be an outlier. In this speech, Martin Luther King Jr. states, “now is the time to make justice a reality for all of God’s children.” The “I Have a Dream” speech is a major event that took place in his time to making the United States a better place. In reality, Martin Luther King Jr.’s objectives could perhaps be seen as impossible to the many prejudice whites listening to his choice of words. This major event led to the tragic assassination of Martin Luther King Jr. He was assassinated at the Lorraine Motel in Memphis, Tennessee on April 4, 1968, at the age of 39. Although he was killed for the basis of his beliefs, others were still motivated to carry on the work of Martin Luther King Jr. and did not give up on his dream. Not only did the assassination make Martin Luther King Jr. an outlier, it caused others to become outliers as well.
Based on the previous events and accomplishments, Martin Luther King Jr. is thought to be a true outlier. This relates back to the novel Outlier because it clarifies the qualifications you need to have in order to be an outlier. The idea of the 10,000-hour rule is indication that Martin Luther King Jr. truly dedicated himself for his dream of equality. From the second a person is born into the world, he or she has the ability to become an Outlier; you just need to work hard to acquire your goals and
