Having knowledge of the foundations and history of nursing helps one to understand how nursing evolved and developed as a profession throughout the centuries. Basic knowledge about the history of nursing is necessary to understand what nursing is today. They start with an associate degree with the opportunities to advance to Bachelorette Science in Nursing (BSN) and Master Science in Nursing (MSN). With the technologies changing every day the need of well educated personnel grows faster. Nurses in the future must continue to monitor changes in technology, advances in scientific knowledge, and changes in society and in the health care delivery system. (Egenes,Ch1,p.23)
The third trend in nursing history shows how modern technologies have enhanced the care delivery process. At its birth nursing only provided care for the physical need of the patient – operating with simple equipment such as bedpans, bandages, nursing bottles, etc. After World War II new medications and new technologies became available, thus making the care delivery more efficient. As technology advanced, machines of all kinds were introduced and adopted by hospitals. Later on modern technologies such as computers, wireless charting, safety monitoring, safety administration of medications, entered the nursing practice. Modern technologies make care delivery safer and nursing tasks easier. Having not spend as much time for charting and checking documents, the nurses have more time to pay attention to their patients and thus improve patient’s satisfaction.
