This assignment will critically analyse and justify the decisions based around a fictitious patient using a clinical decision making framework highlighting its importance to nursing practice. The chosen model will demonstrate clinical decision making skills in the care planning process. The patient’s condition will be discussed in-depth explaining the pathophysiology, social, cultural and ethical issues where appropriate in the care planning and decision making process. Quinn F (2007,p72) states that professional practitioners in nursing, midwifery and specialist community public health nursing spend a significant part of their professional lives making decisions: many are routines and predictable, and others are life or death decisions.
McKenna and Slevin (2008, p ) has described a model as ‘a mental or diagrammatic representation of care which is systematically constructed and which assists practitioners in organising their thinking about what they do, and in the transfer of their thinking into practice for the benefit of the patient and the profession. Models therefore can be seen as conceptual tools or devices that can be used by an individual to understand and place complex phenomena into perspective. The simplest way to learn decision-making skills is to integrate a model into the decision-making progress (Sullivan and Garland, 2010, p173).

The Nursing model which will be incorporated around Franks care will be one by Hellriegel, Jackson and Slocum (2002 p 172).
This model consists of 7 stages which are define and diagnose the problem, set goals, search for alternative solutions, compare and evaluate alternative solutions, choose among alternative solutions, implement the solution selected and to follow-up and control.
