River View High School is a small and somewhat struggling school. Not much more can be expected unless the curriculum is totally redesigned.
The School lunches are not horrible but there are too many corners cut on the ways that the lunches are cooked. Very few things are made fresh and most come from a box or are made by mixing a powder. The milk cartons are usually expired or close to expiring too.
The Library also is rather small due to a lack of funding. There are few classic books and when a student looses/steals a book they do have to pay for it, but the money does not go back to the Library to replace the book. It goes to other activity's.
The Principal is new. It is only his second year but he appears to be doing good other than a clear religious bias. One student talked to him because he was removed from class due to a stated offense to Yoga but the Principal accused him of, "Being Lazy" and "not wanting to do the Yoga Work Out."
The School has minimal fights and what few there are there is rarely ever a very serious one. Most of the fights consist of one to two good hits then either wrestling or pushing and shoving. They are also done in public areas so they end quickly.
The Sports facility's are not perfect but could be greatly improved upon, but like I said earlier, the school is struggling as it is.
I have never personally been through the Summer School Program so I am unable to comment on this.
The Support staff are way too overwhelmed by the problems in the district to be able to effectively help anyone who needs to speak with them.
The teachers are very friendly, but not very effective. The Students mostly walk all over the Teachers. In the eye of the average student a teacher holds little to no authority. This can be seen in classes by students constantly talking while the Teachers are trying to speak or by students simply leaving class as they see fit.
The non-athletic after School is close to non-existent excluding "Hick/Farmers" clubs. There are no intellectual clubs after school such as study programs or Chess/games programs. The New principal has even cut the entire Drama Club Budget so the club now has to support itself, which it can not.
The classrooms are decorated by the teachers personally and most have painted the disgusting walls that the school had. Some have even put up wall paper, but the un-altered class room is dull, boring and prison like.
Most of the computers are from the mid 90's. Though the main computer class has the low end newer computers, the budget is wasted on trying to look hi-tech rather than being hi-tech. What I mean is that way too much money is wasted on getting LCD screens and "comfortable chairs." Not only this but the Tech Guy at the school that runs the network has put such a crippling handicap on the system with restrictions that students can not even access some educational sites or perform many needed searches.
If by Extra Curricular Activities you mean an Athletic Program then, yes, River View does have one, but it is bias on which sports it funds. For example, Football and Guys basketball are the most funded allowing them to get new uniforms and equipment yearly where as Track and Wrestling are unable to get essentials that are needed. The School Track has been in disrepair for years yet the Track team has had to fund-raise to replace the old track with a new one(while paying dues to the ASB club). Even the most basic things for the Wrestling team have been ignored. The team has had the same uniforms since the early 80's and has only been able to afford repair and not replacement unless it came from the coach's pocket. The wrestling mats are the same ones that the school has had for over 35 years. They have simply been recovered only because the School Changed its name.
Local transport is restricted to a small van service ran by BFT to pick up anyone with a bus pass. The stops are few far and in between, not near to people up in Hoover or by the Plants. If you want to ride you must call in the day before so there are no "spur of the moment pickups." Most of the drivers are too personal about the job and purposely leave riders that they do not like or create false reports on them causing them to be either permanently or temporarily removed from the service.
The PTA is run by the parents who are willing to get involved, which is few because Finley is a town of little to no parental motivation. The few that do run the PTA are bias towards students that they don't like and run the organization in a Tyrannical way requiring clubs that are unfunded by the school to pay them back. Most of the accounting is flawed and if the bank statements are examined you can see a clear hole in the bank account.
Just as with the summer school program I have also never been able to personally experience the Special Needs Support service in Finley, but I am also sure that it is corrupt, bias and flawed like much of the Finley programs.
