The current building is old and crumbling. The bathrooms have a permanent stench, although they do not look dirty in general. Paint is peeling off the walls and ceiling all over the place. It is scheduled to be razed and the new building should be ready for the 2009/2010 academic year, if all goes as planned. The school will be housed in a vacant school building in a less than desirable part of town during the construction. The school has a good reputation, locally. However, SC schools as a whole rank in the bottom two or three in the US when compared to other states. It is now in its first year as a Charter school. I would say the school is better at teaching to the low end -- taking a child who is behind and teaching him the basics. They don't know what to do with a child who is ahead. The PTA is very active, but the meetings are not at all interactive and are minimally informative. There is a lot of,"Rah, rah, rah!" for the school at PTA meetings, but no opportunity for parents to ask questions or make suggestions. Visitors are supposed to sign in at the office, but side doors to the building are almost always unlocked during school hours (despite a sign posted saying they are locked). The cafeteria space also serves as the auditorium and gym. It is actually not a bad use of space, although I think the gym classes suffer when the space is double booked. They make an effort to serve healthy foods, but they also always make less healthy alternatives available (ice cream, chocolate milk, cookies). My child never had chocolate milk (just regular skim) on a daily basis before attending this school. I would never put my young child on the buses that serve this county. I constantly hear of incidents that occured on the bus. In addition, I witnessed a bus driver letting a very small (perhaps 5 yr old) child off at a stoplight (which was green at the time) from the left lane. The child got into a pickup truck with an adult in the right lane. Parent or not, it was not a smart thing to do in the middle of an intersection. Overall, the school is adequate for the average child or a child who has some sort of learning disability. The faculty and staff seem to genuinely care about the children and discipline is stressed.
