Previously this year I had the pleasure of being a school volunteer at camp thunderbird. I was quite pleased with the overall weekend. As my son scanned the list of children who would be in my group, he came upon one little boy's name and said he was special and for me to stay close to him and help him in anyway I could. I got to be buddies with young Sawyer. I held his hand and reassured him during the night walk that there was nothing to be afraid of and was borderline humbled at how well the other student's treated him. Which leads me to my little boy who has a learning disability, apparently children who suffer from this have poor social skills. My son has been tormented by his peers for the past two years. I don't blame the student's. Children are notoriously cruel. One particular little girl has been ruthless in her teasing. His teacher knows this and so does the principal yet far to little was done and now with less than seven weeks remaining in the school year I have a little boy who wakes up every morning and puts a smile on his face only to be humiliated every day at school. Yes, his social skills are poor and he brought a lot of this on himself. But where was that adult to hold his hand when he was scared. Certainly not at Elizabeth lane and the after school program. Let's just say the teacher would not be my first pick to oversee children. I often wondered what could bring a child to harm other children for apparently no other reason than being picked on. After seeing my little boy discribe the endless teasing I can see. My son will leave elizabeth lane this year and hopefully never run into those bullies again. And as time goes on and his social skills improve hopefully he wont dread going to school.
