I ended up quitting school in 98. It was during the 2nd week of my junior year. I wish things had been different so I could of stayed but I was needed else where. I never liked being there, I had a lot of troubles. But there was one class that made it tolerable and one teacher that changed my life. That was chorus and Mrs. Hall. I just wanted to say to that wonderful woman, thank you so much for being the one person to give me a chance and having hope for me. I still think about you and say prayers that all is well. You are the best teacher that Southwest could ever hope for. You made a huge difference in my life. And i want you to know I still sing... but sometimes my country slur still shines through lol

Mr benhart is the coolest teacher around he makes music come alive, the past 2 years of marching band has the greatest 2 years of my life. even thou many have lost their cougar pride i have enough 2 go around i try 2 incourage the rookies and vets. even thou somethimes it seems hopeless. some of ther marchers have a solwen heads because of past truphys but they never seem to get that we are a team and must work together as equals. but all in all marching band is nothing with good leadership and Mr B certin has that.

I disagree. Mr. Benhart, our now Band Teacher is very creative. I am going into my third year of marching band and I am thrilled with what we've done. You may think all the good teachers are gone. But how do know? You're not a student anymore. So you don't get to judge if a teacher is good or not. I say Mr. B is a spectacular band teacher and excellent marching instructor. It's true, the band has faltered a little but that is because there is no more fighting spirit in the marching band. Now we have a bunch of pansy little kids who'd rather fight than leave there problems off the feild. But I intend to fix that as head of section next year and keep the moral bursting at the seams.

Before I begin, I just wanted to say that there really isn't a suitable category to put my thoughts in, so I chose the closest one to what I am writing about.
I was a student at SWRHS. I graduated in 2002. At that time, the arts program at Southwest was regarded to be one of the best in any public high school in the county, if not the state. That was five years ago, and how things have changed!!
The band instructor who led the Marching Cougars to their first Superior rating with "Four Scottish Dances" has been fired. His replacement has all but run the band I loved into the ground. He has taken the band into a "traditional" look and feel, which has never worked for them- and it never will. Being a Marching Cougar was never about what it "should look like", it was about breaking boundaries, and blowing the competition away by being different. It saddens me to see this change come.
The pottery teacher has retired, and the replacement in that class also looks to be less than the caliber the first teacher was. I have no proof of this, only hearsay.
The only thing that hasn't changed in the arts program is the drama and choir teacher, Mrs. Hall. I thank every god there is that she is still there and trying to keep a modicum of respect to the art program as it once was. She is an excellent instructor and it will be a sad day indeed when she retires.
If I sound too dramatic, then I apologize. It just saddens me to see such talented students taught by such as these.
