I attended this school. The instructors are terrible. Cosmetology school has to be a hands on experience. Most people can't perform a hair cut or chemical service on someone by just being explained on how to do so. This is what the instructors at this school do. If you are having a problem performing a service on a client, and ask your instructor to assist you, they don't. They take it all into their own hands and do it for you. how does this teach you how to perform this service? it doesn't. also, the tution was only a little over 6,500.00. then your "kit" was a little over 100.00. the school gets 8,500.00 per student on a pell grant that is attending this school. that leaves a lot of money that the student should recieve back from the owner- and we don't!! I now attend East Central College and I am still on a Pell Grant, of which I get the remainder!!! this semster I got back over 1,000.00! Salem College of Hairstyling is a JOKE!!!

Their preparation for State Board Exams was very impressive. One of the best schools in the state as far as Board Exam preparation goes. On the other hand my daughter and a few other friends of hers applied to the school and wanted to have part time status so that they could have jobs after school, the instructor (whom i later learned was just temporary) told them that they could NOT be part time students until after they had finished their classroom hours, but after they graduated to the floor they were allowed to become part-time students. When my daughter and her friends graduated from the classroom and talked to the new instructor about becoming part-time students, they were informed that part-time hours/status was no longer available for students at this branch of the school. The students were not informed of the change, and it affected their ability to find employment after school hours. Also, when my daughter applied to the school she was told by the temporary instructor that there were NO forms of Student Financial Aid besides the Pell Grant. We later found out that there was indeed the Federal Direct Stafford Loan available. It caused my daughter undue financial hardship not to have this information, because although the school provides basic supplies, there are MANY supplies that you pay for out-of-pocket. In conclusion.....the school needs better financial aid training for it's course instructors ( because they apparently also act as financial aid counselors). And the school needs up-to-date information on school policies that go into- and out-of effect (like part-time hours made available to employed students). Also, they need to give a the student a summary of how much the student is getting from the government, and an explaination of why and where that money is being dispursed............. The school got close to $8,000 from my daughter's Pell Grant but tuition is only around $6,500.....Where is that extra money going? Why is did daughter not get that extra money for other expenses?
