i have had few problems with the teachers at GCMS, however this past week my daughter went to school after burning her arm with her straight iron the night before. the "teacher" whom both of my children have had and i have trusted for the past three years took it upon herself to call my child a "cutter" in front of all of her classmates.
my daughter is 13 years old. she is a beautiful, yet impressionable young lady. this hurt her and she said she was going to go see Dr. Battle the next day (friday). my daughter decided not to go. her reason being "she wanted to see if her teacher would say anything else". honestly, i believe my child was afraid to confront mr. battle and possibly afraid of any consequences that would come from her telling the principal on her teacher.
finally, monday came and i decided to call knowing my daughter would just "let it go". i'm sure she wanted to forget the incident and she is a very sweet and forgiving child and decided not to say anything. as a mother, i could not let it go.
to make a long story short, i called the front office. i requested to speak to Dr. Battle (the principal), or Ms. Beasley (the asst. principal). the lady at the front desk said neither was available and i would have to request a meeting or TRY to call back later. i told her the problem needed to be addressed today. she put me through to a very sweet lady named ann, but she is the mental health specialist who in her own words could not help me in any way as far as her teacher or getting in with a principal, etc...but with my permission she would talk with my daughter. i gave her that permission but also told her i had to speak with someone else who could help me put this teacher in check. she said i would have to continue to call back until i reached someone.
i called back...now the front desk lady said Dr. Battle was not on the property and Ms. Beasley was with someone else. she got my number and said one or the other would call me at work or on my cell.
10min later front desk calls back. Dr Battle is now somewhere on the premises but could not be located (how very convenient), and Ms. Beasley (whom i really like and has always been a huge help) was now at lunch.
my daughter went through a humiliatin experience with this teacher in front of all her peers, yet no one seems to care but the mental health expert who is unable to help.
im at a loss for words and if you are considering bringing your child to this school, think twice. their self esteem could be at risk more than usual and not from the other children, from the teacher who are suppose to respect and look after our children.
