I am a parent of 2 children who attend Frederick Harris Elementary, Springfield, Massachusetts.
I would have to say that my children have not attended other schools, so I have nothing to compare Frederick Harris to other than my elementary school that I attended as a child myself.
I was impressed since the day my first child went to pre-school.
The teachers are personable, which is important to me. It allows the line of communication to be left open. They are available to talk with you and let you know what your child is doing great at or not so great at. And also give you tips on how to help your child improve.
They have a Computer Room, Library, Music Room and Gym which the children grades 1 through 5 go to on a weekly basis.
They have a PTO/PTA, which meets once a month. It is open to all people involved in the children's lives. I must say that I am quite disappointed at the turnout. Although, they are working at trying to get more involvement and attendance.
The principal is very awesome. I have talked with her on many occasions, and she is a very smart woman. She has a great reason for the school doing or not doing something, and she takes all opinions into account. So when you are talking, she is really listening.
If you are a parent of a Frederick Harris student, they are ALWAYS looking for volunteers. I strongly recommend that anyone who has not volunteered to help out or has not attended a PTO/PTA meeting, should try it. I am sure that you will not be disappointed and in fact, be enlightened. It's a great way to be involved with your children's school and know what is going on and have a say in it.
Overall, I would recommend Frederick Harris Elementary to any parent who is looking into this school and not sure.
