I have a totally different perspective than the person before me. Curriculum is determined by the school system, BPS, not the individual school. I have found my children to be challenged and encouraged to grow. The workshop model for reading, writing, and math has accelerated my child's progress, and I have seen similar growth in my child's friends' progress after talking with their parents. We are thrilled with the school, the teachers, the safe setting, and the principal. It was hard to see the last principal go, but I don't think folks have given the new principal a chance. She has always been accessible to me and to those I've spoken with. I'm sorry anyone feels the way "Marie" does, but I also have trouble believing anyone sees this school as unsafe or poorly run. I think the Philbrick goes a lot farther than other public schools to help all kids. Heck, I've even seen teachers and the principal getting kids rides home so they could stay for afterschool activities and fun things. Other schools don't go the extra mile like this.

I am a parent with a child at the John D. Philbrick school. Though most of the teachers are very friendly, the cirriculum at this school is very poor. They emphasize math and writing and thats about it. I never realized how far behind my child was, unitl I met other children who seem to be learning things at a much faster pace. For example, they barely teach any history, spelling,or any other of the important subjects you would expect your child to learn. You would be amazed at how alot of the children in the higher greades do not know what their vowels are, how to spell, count money or tell time. In my opinion it is a very poorly run school. The language on some of the older children is terrible, and thats during school time!! The principle seems to never be available when you need to speak with her. Recently a fire was started by a student at the school and the parents were informed via automated message. We were never informed personally by the principle and were never told what was done with the child. I'm very sad to say I have become extremely disappointed with what has become of this school. Thankfully I am in the process of removing my child from this school and I tell you, it can't come fast enough!!
