I am a parent of a child who attends McKinley Primary. She has been there for two years now and I got to thinking about headlice. She'd never had it before, which is a miracle, because if you attend public school, sooner or later you are going to get it; it's like a natural law or something.
A week later, guess what? My daughter who has long, thick hair which hangs to the backs of her knees, has to go to the doctor so I can make sure to get the prescription strength shampoo because the over-the-counter swill never works. It costs $25.00. This, my friends is not my first go-round--I've already raised a child to adulthood, and have 2 grandsons--and let me tell you, the second child (18 years apart)is a whole lot easier than the first because now I have the power of knowledge.
Now, on to my point. It's very gross to go to work and worry that I'm giving lice to the elderly people I take care of every day. Did a louse fall off me, onto her Victorian couch or her hospital bed--? Or can't take my kid to daycare because she might have lice.
When I was a kid, if a child got lice, the nurse checks the heads of the class and then sends home notes specifically saying: your child has contracted lice. Maybe a pamphlet would be nice. Then remind parents that situation needs to be corrected.
Same thing with my 26-yearold when she was in school. What happened to that kind of concern from our principals, our teachers and school nurses.
Now, I have been told that there was never a head check of my child's class. How can the parents know if they are not told specifically that their child has lice, then how can they fix it?
My opinion is the policy as it stands needs to be refigured and be a little more proactive than telling the child, "Just don't hug a "certain child" because she always carries lice."
This is not cool. I send my child to school to learn, not be subjected to bloodsucking parasites. Just be proactive. When a vigilant parent reports lice, just have the nurse or volunteer teachers check the class and ask for the parents help by treating every child in the class at the same time and erradicating this colonization.
Sincerely,
Marcey Badillo
