We enjoyed walking toward the track. An attachment on the train held a cloth bag with the sorted mail that came from Augusta and other places. There was a post office were mail was placed in PO boxes for us to pickup. There was the train station in the same building. Outgoing mail ws placed in a similar cloth bag. It was placed on a post and would be picked up by the daily train. ... This Georgia Railroad passenger train went the next next town called Blythe. There another post office would place the local mail in individual pick-up boxes inside the lobby. I remember buying new commertative stamps. The community only had a few residences. ... The families would play pickup base ball games in the sand lots. There was always n umpire present to keep order. We always felt the umpire was right and in that time we did not argue with the decision. ... It was a simple life without running water. We... We dug huge holes to hold the garbage. The boys in the family enjoyed the digging and the covering up of the trash holes. ... There was a wooden out building called a necessary. It would need to be moved occasionally. The boys would pick it up and place it above another hole in the dirt. The old hole was covered up.... It was a three story home. A balcony on the second level was used by the railroad president to look out and see the train struggle to make it up the steep grade. ... The train engine had a container of sand that they could make to 'sand the track.' The sand grit help the train engine to make it up the steep hill. we are new to the school but came from another richmond co. elem. school (SOUTHSIDE ELEM.) and it is like NIGHT AND DAY!my kids love it and WE couldn't be happier!we had lots of horrid experiences at SOUTHSIDE ELEM. that were NEVER taken care of even after promises by both the principal and teacher!so we moved to a new home because of it...we are very happy now!the place is very clean, newly renovated and the staff is awesome!we were very disappointed in SOUTHSIDE ELEM. but now we have a great school and feel happy we took such a large leap to relocate for our kids!the staff all around care abt the kids and there is a different approach to order control and also a lot more attention to the kids.the teachers are in control and have a positive outlook.we get daily progress and performance reports and we love that!leaving SOUTHSIDE ELEM. and going to gracewood was like leaving h*ll to go to heaven... we are so proud to call gracewood elem. our new school and we have such a great feeling when they go everyday!SOUTHSIDE ELEM. scared and scarred my kids for life and the staff is nothing compared to gracewood elem.even the janitors make us feel welcomed and happy abt the beauty within the facility!we couldn't be happier and it shows in our lives everyday!we have never felt better abt the daily praises from our kids about the place and we feel like it is truely the BEST SCHOOL EVER! THANK GOD FOR GRACEWOOD!
