I attended Great Plain Elementary School from 1st grade through 6th. That would be from 1975-1981. I cannot begin to rate how the school is currently functioning, but I will say that most of the teachers I had as a student at Great Plain were a wonderful part of my life that I will always remember and treasure.
Mrs. DeRobertus (sp?) was my 1st grade teacher and I loved her dearly. The most amazing thing I remember about her though is that even after I was grown and married, I ran into her in Walmart and she knew who I was. With the hundreds of children she would have had since my time in her class, I found that pretty amazing.
Mrs. Smith was my 3rd grade teacher and I remember that she took time to pay attention to me as a child who just didn't fit in. It was wonderful to know she cared.
Mr. Watson was my 4th grade teacher, and he was an amazing teacher with creative methods that completely held my interest in science and math. And, it was in 4th grade that I developed a love for poetry that continues today.
In 5th grade, Mr. Gulya helped me to finally learn those terrible 9x tables and didn't make me feel foolish because I still hadn't learned my math facts. He also understood my avoidance of children on the playground and my love of books so he let me be a library helper during recess.
I wish I could remember the name of the librarian, but I don't. I can tell you that she was a pretty special lady who encouraged my love for reading.
Overall, the teachers at Great Plain Elementary School made a difference in my life, and I'd have to say that they are part of the reason that I am a teacher today.
