Coming to this school was the best choice I have made for myself. In high school, I had a vague idea of what I wanted to do in my future, but nothing was concrete. Choosing a major that I can stick to for four years was a difficult decision. I chose liberal arts for that reason. I decided I needed to know more about everything for me to really know what I want to do. This school did exactly that for me. Because of it's requirements, I was able to take a variety of courses. In many of these coureses, I was able to get a deeper understanding of the importance of each subject matter instead of just learning and memorizing facts. I was able to understand how it connects with my own life, and that made everything that much more important and valuable to me. Because of this education, I believe I now understand what is right for me and clarified what I was to pursue in the future.

Soka University is a great place to study. Students come from more than 30 different countries, and we have very small size class with only 400 entire student body. One unique thing about Soka is its study abroad program. Every student is required to go to study abroad, which is very rare for other schools. Study abroad experience will definitely develop your sense of cultural sensivility and makes you appreciate the different cultures!

I am a freshman at Soka University of America and my experience here has been amazing. Because I enjoy helping people and am pursuing a future career somewhere abroad where I can help people dealing with issues such as health and poverty, Soka has provided me with many opportunities. I have been involved in many extracurriculars with a job, internships, and volunteer services that have made my passion even stronger. To my benefit, Soka offers a great education, with courses in International Studies, so I can learn more about countries that I want to help. In addition, Soka has students from 30 different countries and offers 4 language courses, allowing me to experience different cultures and learn about their backgrounds. This school has definitely changed my life for the better and I would recommend it to anyone who is looking for a life-changing experience!

I am a current junior at SUA pursuing a degree in BA Liberal Arts. Prior to declaring my concentration in Humanities and even afterwards, I've taken many classes related to concentrations other than humanities. This continues to be, for me, a truly enriching experience since I prefer learning over specialization. Since SUA receives no federal assistance and is instead run on donations received by benefactors, it has the freedom to structure its curriculum on the learner centered approach that is the guiding principle of Soka education. Other than academics, students are encouraged to take classes in creative arts such as visual arts, ceramics, music and dance. The new Performing arts center recently inaugurated on campus has 5 dressing rooms, a dance studio and two rehearsal rooms for student performers. These creative classes start all the way from beginner to advanced levels. The foreign language program at SUA is I believe, an effective means of understanding foreign cultures. Juniors are required to study abroad in a country that speaks the language of their choice at SUA for a semester. There are four language offerings at SUA- Chinese, Japanese, Spanish and French. Although, it is required of every student to choose a concentration to graduate with in their senior year, they can, if they wish do a double concentration that shall go on their transcript. Career options post-SUA are diverse. The four concentrations viz Humanities, Social and behavioral sciences, Environmental science and International relations open up a wide field of careers and higher study options to SUA graduates in BA liberal arts.

I’m currently a sophomore-year student as SUA. There are so many aspects of Soka that I appreciate, but here I want to talk about the clubs, extra-curricular activities, and work/internship that are available. This year, I am taking the position of Student Union Executive Council Secretary. At the same time, I am a member of Japanese drum club, a member of International Festival Executive Committee, and am working at the university. I was in Indian dance club and was an active member of two departments under the student union. Also, there are a variety of jobs and internship that are available to students. Some of my friends do internship at local elementary schools. Last week, one student got internship at Senator’s office! Because Soka is a small university with only 460 students, all these activities are available to whoever is interested. I am truly happy that Soka offers a large variety of activities and opportunities for students.

I'm going to be a junior this year at Soka University of America. Having studied on this campus for about two years now, I feel like the experience I've gained has been so enriching. I come from New Delhi, India. Being an international student, I was able to appreciate the differences in arenas like those of education and diversity among others a lot more, since I could see a marked distinction. I come from an education system that focusses on route memorization and spitting all the knowledge on the paper without even understanding the concepts behind it. An education where many times the relationship between students and pofessors is driven by 'fear'. An education that might be producing a bunch of degree holders, but creating no value. Coming to Soka, I noticed a marked variation in the way classes were held. My professors actually cared about my personal growth in class. The student is to professor ratio being 9:1, made it a lot more intimate and everytime I struggled with something, I didn't have to think twice before knocking on my professor's door for help. Studying at Soka for the first time felt like creating value out of my education. Also, as a part of the curriculum, every student is required to study abroad for a semester, in your junior year, in the country of the language you opt for. Soka provides its students with many opportunities. Most activities and initiatives at Soka are student driven, which makes the experience all the more special and worthwhile. In terms of campus clubs, Soka has more than 30 different clubs on campus. Having an international student body of about 40%, sudents bring down cultures from all over the globe onto one platform. I've been a lead officer of the Indian dance club on campus and an active member of Sualseros (salsa dancing), my freshman year. For me personally, Soka has been the best decision. Living in a community of students committed to bringing about a change, gives me an opportunity to reiterate my mission on a daily basis.

I'm a senior here at SUA. One of the things that i like in this university is this small community that you can really make close relationship with students and faculties. there're only 400 students where everyone knows everyone! Students are from over 30 countries. i know in other big universitites, they have more viriety of students with more international students. However, it is also true that it is really hard in that kind of environment where thousands of students study to get to know them. you might not be able to see the person you met today. but here, you WILL see them everyday, which makes us really easy to make close relationship! and understand other cultures!! it's totally an amazing experience, talking to many kinds of people from all over the world. I really appreciate the education here, because it cherishes each student and broadens our views in our lives.
Subject: Professors Submitted by: Choy Shin Im a: Student Date: 23/06/2010
Being an Asian and studying in an Asian country has taught me that students are there only to be seen and not heard. Class discussions are almost non-existent and even if the teachers ask the class questions, no one ever volunteers to answer them. Student-teacher relationships are always based upon fear and authority. Only a selected few will be lucky enough to have one or two teachers that they can actually turn to if they have problems. That’s why I never ever knew the feeling of “looking forward to classes,” until I came to Soka. The classes in SUA are really interesting. But what makes it stand out is the professors. Professors in SUA are really motivated to create an enjoyable environment for the students to learn. Not through lectures where only the teacher talks, but through class discussions, kind of like the relationship that Plato and Socrates had. Teachers here are committed to forging a strong bond with their students, helping us out not only with our class assignments but also with our daily problems. They don’t hand in assignments and test just to torture you. You know they truly want you to learn because their office doors are always open if you need any help. If I had to name something that I truly appreciate from SUA and what I would miss most, it would be the relationships with the professors that I have made in my years at Soka. They have made me into what I am today and I’m truly grateful for that.
Subject: Parking Submitted by: Raymond Im a: Student Date: 07/06/2010
Parking at Soka University of America is a very simple process. First off, there is NO parking fee, EVER! The two largest parking lots on campus are right at the entrance of the school as soon as you enter. Finding a place to park is never an issue! There are no spots that are “reserved” for certain special people, so you can park anywhere you see an open spot (I think this also shows how we focus on equality throughout our university). There are parking lots close to the student dormitories so you never have to walk more than 45 seconds to get to and from your car and your (albeit, very spacious dormitory room)!! Most parking is in regular spaced lots, but there are a few spots along University Circle that require parallel parking, so if you are learning how to drive, it is a great opportunity to practice on campus! When I have my friends who have gone to other colleges come visit me, they always ask “How much is parking?” It gives me great pleasure and joy to surprise them that, yes, it is free, and you WILL be able to find a spot! (In my four years here, the only time I remember us ever charging for parking is on International Festival, a huge festival when over 5000 people come through our campus throughout the day for cultural events and performances.) Oh and one last thing, since the classroom buildings and dormitories are practically right next to each other, there is no “driving” to classes! “Commuting” to class is easy at Soka – just wake up and walk down to class!
Subject: Dorms Submitted by: monse Im a: Student Date: 16/12/2009
First of all, in Soka we are encourages to stop using the word dorm and instead say Residence halls. I think this reflect with more accuracy the environment that one can find in the res Halls. Dorm are mainly a place where students live and sleep. Our Res Halls are a place were we do that but, most importantly, where we learn much of what we take out of our Soka experience: how to interact with people from other culture. The environment is amazing! One does not pass more than a week without bumping onto a present outside your room from a classmate. Now, during christmas time, the situation has gotten out of control! I have recieved eight wonderful presents in 3 days. From the RAs to the students, from the Student Union to us, from a classmate, from the University. IN Soka there is passion, committement, companioship and comaraderie... but above all things there is love. Love for each other, love for our mission and love for our personal ideals.

Soka University is a small private university located in Aliso Viejo, California. The name of our school, “Soka” means “value creation” in Japanese. Makiguchi, the mentor of the founder, Ikeda, believed that every single individual has his or her unique ability to create value in society. Being an educator, Makiguchi proposed Soka education, which respects each student and helps him or her to strengthen his or her ability to create value. His disciple, Daisaku Ikeda founded Soka University to realize Makiguchi’s vision of Soka education. For this reason, our school is designed to respect every student as much as possible. For example, our class size is very small. There are usually thirteen students in one class (and maximum class size is twenty). In addition, total number of students on campus is about 450. Thanks to this small class size, professor can take care of each student in the class. School also encourages interaction between students and faculties. For instance, faculties’ offices are located right next to classrooms, so that we can freely stop by their offices after the class. Faculties correspond with the school’s idea, always supporting students inside/ outside of the class. All of faculties are excellent and very open to new idea. Through Soka, I was able to meet great mentors of my life. Being a liberal arts school, Soka also gives us a great opportunity to find your future. In this school, you will not major a particular subject; instead, in your third year, you will decide your concentration (Social Behavioral Science, Humanity, International Study, and Environmental Study) to focus on your interest that you find in the previous two years. There are always pros and cons. For those who have not found any particular things to do in the future, Soka is the best choice. On the other hand, for those who already have particular interest, Soka might not be the best choice. In my case, however, Soka’s liberal arts education changed my dream. Back in my country, I was strongly interested in literature, and I decided that I would have majored it if I had not been accepted by Soka. After taking some courses in Social Behavioral Science as well as ones in Humanity, I realized that what I really want to do in my future is not literature, but economics. As I wrote before, if I had been to another school, I would major literature and be satisfied with that. However, thanks to Soka, I discovered my other interest which I would not realize at other schools. Besides academics, Soka also has a unique social life. All students at Soka have to live in the dormitory for all four years. Soka has two types of dormitory: “double room” dormitory (provides one big room for two people) and “suite room” dormitory (provides a room for two people with one shared bathroom and two single bedrooms). Therefore, in your freshman year, you will have a roommate or suitemate. Your roommate will be selected by Resident Hall Coordinator, according to your preference of living environment. After the freshman year, you can choose your roommate; many students continue to live with their roommate in the freshman year. I was lucky to get private room from lottery, but I’m still in good term with my previous roommate. Our dormitory is awesome! Each room has its own bathroom, and therefore, you don’t have to share the bathroom with more than two people. Also, each dorm has at least two printers to which students have access for free. In addition to printer rooms, there are laundry room and community kitchen in each dorm. Some dorms have even an exercise room and a “multi faith room” (Our school is non-sectarian, and there is no facility for a particular religion). As I wrote before, our campus has only 450 students, and almost all of them live in campus dormitory. Because of this small community life, we have been able to unite as a school. Imagine that you live with your classmates in everyday. Every morning, you will go to the class with them. After the class, you will eat lunch with them. You might also see them at the library and gym. Thus, in everywhere you go, you will see your some of your classmates. Isn’t that crazy? But, at least I really like it. My high school had 3,000 students in total, and therefore, I only knew a few of them in my class. We had no interaction across the classes. On the other hand, I was able to meet so many different people in different classes through a lot of in-class/ extracurricular activities, even though the size of school is much smaller than that of my high school. So far, I am really satisfied with Soka. I have only two more years until I graduate here. Very frankly, Soka’s curriculum is not easy. In fact, our academic standard has increased every year, for many students are attracted by our alumni’s success in their future careers (many of them went to famous graduate school, like Harvard and Columbia). Also, being an international student, I had to really challenge myself to overcome language difficulty. However, thanks to the support of so many people on campus, I was able to overcome the difficulties here. Right now, I’m preparing for my study abroad program (Every junior students here are required to go study abroad to a country of respective language you have taken. For, example, I took Spanish 100 and 200, and I’m going to Spain). I’m sure that that’s gonna be another challenge to me, but I believe that I can make it. In the future, I want to contribute to the development of international society somehow, by utilizing the things that I learned from Soka.

When I started my college career, I had no idea what I was in for. I thought I was going to school essentially to party and make friends. However, coming to Soka University of America was a completely different experience than I had expected to have. The campus is absolutely breath-taking, the classes are super small and focused on the success of students, and we are definitely spoiled by the staff and our professor! We receive an immense amount of care and attention, and in turn we are expected to give 100% in everything that we do. Isn’t that the way it should be? In addition, the classes are challenging, and often quite busy. Students with poor time management who also participate in many extracurricular activities may find school very stressful, but we all learn eventually that academics are our priority and we begin to better manage our time in order to fit in all the things we wish to do! It is a very enriching experience to look back at these past four years and realize I have become so much more responsible through the growth I have experienced in this amazing university!!! Being at SUA has given me the opportunity to become not only a better student, but also a better person. Most students here are serious about their studies, but also study to acquire the necessary knowledge to be able to make a difference out in the world. Talks about human rights, education, and even recycling are common topics among students during lunch hours or other free times. Never before have I met so many people willing to do anything to contribute to the well-being and betterment of society. I used to be a very close-minded person compared with who I am today, but I believe with all of my heart that thanks to the education I have received at Soka University of America I have grown, matured, and visualized a concrete dream for the future. Furthermore, all Juniors at this university, are required to study abroad for a semester after studying their language of choice (Spanish, Chinese, or Japanese) for two years. Without a doubt, my study abroad experience was the best thing I’ve done in my life, so far. I stayed with a host family in Japan and met a great amount of fabulous people. The Japanese culture is completely different that the LAtin American culture, but I truly enjoyed it!! The friendships I made while I was abroad are definitely unique!! I still keep in touch with many of my friends and hope to one day be able to travel the world and visit them. In addition, my language skills improved beyond what I thought possible. I even felt sad at the end of my study abroad for having to come back home. I truly believe that SUA offers one of the best educations out there. Soka has a very student centered curriculum that values the opinion and uniqueness of every single student. I would not trade my university for any other. Soka University of America has changed my path in life!!

Soka has been such a great experience for me as a student. I have grown so much in the one year that i have been here, and cant wait for the next three years of even more challenges and growth. The school really lives up to its promise of providing students a thorough humanistic education and readying them to live the life of contributive world citizens. This philosophy is infused in every aspect of life here at soka from our classes and club activities to the informal dialogs and sharing of ideas and experiences between students and professors. The professors we have are beyond qualified, eager to teach, and passionate about the educational philosophy. They are not just our professors; they are our friends too. I am extremely happy to be here because I don't think I could get the same education anywhere else.

Soka University of America is a 4 years private, liberal arts university. We have students from all over the world so it’s very diverse. We currently have about 400 students. SUA is a very unique university. All students are required to take foreign languages, and go study abroad for a semester. SUA currently offers Spanish, Japanese, and Chinese classes. I went to Chile for my study abroad. It was very good opportunity for me to learn different culture and broaden my view. At SUA majority of students live on campus. Because SUA is such a small university, we are able to get to know people, and interact with faculties easily. Average class size is 13-16 so it is very student-centered. Residence hall life is very comfortable. Each room has its own bathroom, AC, room phone, bed, chair, and closet. It is very clean and safe. Club activities are very active in SUA. There are more than 30 clubs: Soccer, Track and field, tennis, hip hop dance, Indian dance, Hawaiian dance, Salsa, Chorus group, Korea, MUN, medical path, and many other clubs. Mission of Soka University of America is to foster a global citizen committed to living a contributive life. By communicating with students from different countries, studying both Eastern and Western philosophy, studying abroad, we are able to develop ourselves as global citizens.

I am a senior student at SUA and just came back from my study abroad in Beijing, China. SUA requires all the students to study abroad in their junior year for a semester to the country where your target language is spoken. Study abroad program is one of the most popular and fantastic programs that SUA offers, and my experience in China for a semester was absolutely one of my eye-opening experiences. I can share my amazing 4 months for hours, but the most important thing I learned was that despite all kidns of differences, we all are the same human beings who must become happy. We all have various kinds of differences; however, ultimately we need to cherish those treasures that only you have, and each one of us should respect it. Soka's curriculum proior to my study abroad definitely helped me make the most of my life in China, for example, small class size, residential life, and students' diversity. Students live in an environment where students from over 30 countries around the world gather and live together. Of course there are many challenges every day, but this is because we are in the midst of training and this is why we grow so much as an individual. SUA's mission is to foster a steady stream of global citizens committed to living a contributive life. This is our life-long mission as SUA student, and that is why we have such wonderful curriculum.

I am a senior and graduating in four months. In retrospect, leadership experiences and cultural diversity really made me grow as a person. One of the leadership positions I had was a co-chair of Environmental Department. I took the position in the first year of this department. This leadership experience for the brand-new organization made me learn how to communicate with groups from different entities, such as student body, the school administrations, cafeteria staff, the facility department, and off-campus environmental organizations. Also, listening to diverse ideas, I came to be able to synthesize different opinions in order to make an optimum choice for the department. Addition to this position, I served as a committee chair of Ikeda Speech Discussion and Student Festival. This kind of experience is not rare in this school. I see around the campus and find many of my colleagues taking leaderships in different fields, including Academic Department, athletics teams, and clubs. We have around 400 students on campus, and the school is only 8 year-old. I love the momentum of this school, where each student takes a responsibility and leadership to advance the school to higher levels. Along with leadership experiences, this school let me savor diverse cultures. I started learning hiphop and Indian dance. We have about 30 clubs, and 6 of them are dance clubs, ranging from hiphop, and break to Indian, and Hula dances. Students from India choreograph Indian dance, and students from Hawaii choreograph Hula. Culturally diverse student body, coming from about 30 countries, makes this school very unique. Also, thanks to Study Abroad program of the school, I was able to study in China for 4 months without paying any extra fees besides regular tuition. I enjoyed making friends, eating Chinese food, traveling around the big country with night trains. Such experiences at Soka allowed me to expand my capacities and discover new horizons

I am a student here and will be a senior next semester. I can say that coming to Soka University is one of the best choices I’ve ever made in my life. I have so many reasons why I could say so. But, I’ll talk about three of them 1, small student body 2, diversity and 3, study abroad program. Because we have a small student body and most of us live in student dorms, we know one another very well and we have “culture of care” everywhere on-campus. Personally, I made many good friends whom I can share anything and show my true self without hiding. Not only among friends but faculty-student relationship is very strong. Faculty members often keep their doors of their office open and welcome to hear students’ questions and opinions anytime. Because of the size of student body, students are able to maximize their learning opportunities in classrooms and building strong bonds with friends and faculty members outside of classrooms as well. In terms of diversity, we have students from about 30 different countries. Students appreciate the diversity of student body and respect different cultures. Throughout the four years, we have been trained to be global citizens in many senses. Lastly, we have very unique study abroad program. We have three different language classes, Spanish, Japanese, and Chinese. I believe we are preparing to have French in the future. Language classes and study abroad are requirement for all students. In fall semester of junior year, I went to Beijing, China for my study abroad. Although I have studied language and learned a lot about Chinese culture, to be there and to live there were very different from what I have imagined. Of course, I had a hard time to adjust myself in China, but more than that I could build strong friendship with Chinese people and also serious problems which they are facing. After study abroad, I was more determined to live a contributive life for world peace. Life in Soka is great and I believe that this university is bringing a number of global citizens into the world

I am Rhea Bithar, a senior at SUA. Everyday at SUA has been a learning experience for me. Everyday has had challenges from which my life has grown so much and looking back on my 3 and half years here I can say I treasure every experience whether they were struggles or good times. I have had the opportunity of getting to know Professors and students who truly care about each other and help each other work toward their dream. SUA, for me is no simple education, it is learning at a profound level where I could learn so much from people who are willing to support each other grow and live up to their full potential. When there are crises situations in the world and very little hope for people, I feel it is the Soka students who will carry hope wherever they go and impart it to those in need of it.

I am Alankrita, a senior at SUA. I feel privileged to be a student at Soka University of America for it offers the most humanistic education. SUA is a small liberal arts college in Aliso Viejo. I am from India where education is just route learning and therefore I never really had an opportunity to ponder the purpose of education. However, coming to Soka helped me deepen my love for education. For the first time I saw a direct relation between what I studied in class and its use in real life. The rare opportunity to live with students from 30 countries is one the best experiences I have had in Soka. I have been able to create lifelong friendships that go deeper than just hanging out with each other. We all share a sense of purpose which inspires me to study harder each day. There are unlimited opportunities for growth even outside class. Through my four years I have been involved in a student department called Ikeda Speech Discussion (ISD). The department was formed to study messages and speeches written by the school founder Daisaku Ikeda to SUA. Through ISD meetings I have come to understand the expectations of our school founder and meet friends who share my passion. I have also been an active member of the Taiko club (Japanese drumming). It’s truly a joy to play taiko. Everyday there are activities being held on campus. Most of them are student driven. The student centered education that SUA focuses on gives us the power to make anything happen.

I'm a Sophomore here and I have learned a lot about academics but also about myself during my past year here. The entire atmosphere here is designed around the needs and desires of the students. Everything is easily accessible (including handicap accessible) physically and otherwise. If students want to change something, there is always a means to be able to do that here, and if not, then they can make a means. Every faculty and staff member is willing to help the student reach their goals or help them find out what those goals are. The students are also really supportive of one another and always go out of their way to help eachother any way they can.

I have been a student at Soka University of America for almost one year. I am currently a sophomore studying liberal arts. I came to Soka University with minimal expectations, as I had only heard it was a new univeristy. I assumed that the curriculum would be underdeveloped and the students of limited diversity. However, upon my arrival from Australia, I realized that I was prejudgmental. Firstly, the student body was very diverse. The campus was amazingly beautiful and the people were extremely welcoming. Professors and staff were very friendly and approachable, and the food was delicious. Soka University consists of diversity and an excellent curriculum focused on the global society. Most importantly, the opportunities that I receive at Soka were beyond my imagination. I have had the opportunity to participate in developing the Soka Education Student Research Project (SESRP), which is a student-led entity on campus where students explore, critique and develop the philosophy of Soka education, take part in the Swim Team, develop strong bonds with all my professors, both inside and outside of class, and expand my horizon of academia. I have never been so challenged in critical thinking prior to my education here. I am now empowered and driven to seriously contribute my life for humanity, peace and society.

Soka University opened in 2001 on its 103-acre Aliso Viejo campus in South Orange County, California. It's one of the moste beautiful campuses you'll ever see, but the real beauty is what's happening inside the classrooms. SUA is founded upon the Buddhist principles of peace, human rights and the sanctity of life and offers a non-sectarian curriculum open to top students of all nationalities and beliefs.
