When we learned we were moving to Alabama, we looked at schools online to reside in an area where the high school education was rated highly. We chose Pell City High because of it's reputation as reported online. Since our relocation, I have learned the following:
). The school is dirty. That was our first impression; walking in and thinking "My gosh! Don't they pay janitors here? or perhaps they don't have enough staff?" At any rate, the classrooms, the administration offices, and the music and gym facilities certainly need better storage media to begin with; shelves, cabinets, closets, and other storage. Once organized and 'thinned out' the rooms could be cleaned and kept clean. If we're paying janitors, it should be expected. Perhaps a few promising student could become volunteer'student assistants' processing paperwork that's not confidential - alphabetizing and shredding, etc. It would benefit both the student and the office.
). It appears teachers have little control in the classroom. I'm from the 'old school' where parents were supportive of teachers. Apparently today's teachers are more comfortable associating with or being accepted by students than they are in discipline. Really, I don't know what can be done about that except they become 'coached' somehow to learn to control their classrooms.
). The front office staff is haughty. Each time my husband or I have visited, the staff neglects to greet us even though they've seen us standing there. When we are acknowledged, it's with the aire of annoyance, particularly by one woman whose name I don't know. She is terse and interrupting. This same person is curt with students. My personal belief is that administration sets the standard for respect. Students should absolutely show respect for authority and other people. The office should be the first example.
). All counselors I've dealt with are polite and extremely helpful. Teachers I've met are very accommodating and informative about our student's progress.
